Officer Gregory A Jones.
Sgt.David Wilson was chosen to recieve this award for 2010.
David Wilson is a 24 year veteran of the Fort Worth Police Department. David
was promoted to Sergeant in David in 1994 and has had several assignments
since his promotion including patrol, narcotics, and down town bikes. He is
currently assigned to the NPO unit of NPD3. David was nominated for the Hank
Nava Officer of the Year Award due to his never say no to an officer in need
attitude. Over the last several years David has become known for his
charitable work benefiting fellow officers. David's real claim to fame comes
from all the hours and hard work he has put into organizing benefit bowling
tournaments. These events are not only very lucrative fund raisers, they are
fun way to get everyone together for a good cause. Over the last several
years he has assisted in raising close to $100,000 to help officers and
their families overcome unforeseen challenges. David is a wonderful example
of the police family taking looking out for one another.
On Tuesday, Jan. 12th, Officer Lisa Ramsey competed in the Chisholm
Challenge at Will Rogers Memorial Center. As lead off to the Stock Show &
Rodeo, competitors with physical limitations ride horses and vie for ribbons
and belt buckles in two events - Western Pleasure riding and Trail riding.
Lisa won 1st place in her class in the Western Pleasure category and 4th
place in the Trail competition.
Officer Ramsey was shot and disabled by a gunman during a robbery in 2003
while on-duty working in the Narcotic Unit. Her outlook on her life now is
an inspiration. She considers the many friends she has made since the
shooting a blessing.
Lisa has been riding horses for 11 months at the All-Star Equestrian
Foundation in Rendon. This organization provides instruction and assistance
to people with physical disabilities as a form of therapy. This year's
Chisholm Challenge was Lisa's first competition as well as for her horse
Cody - a Haflinger & quarter horse mix. They trained for several months for
the competition. Lisa's devoted volunteers, Megan, Susan & Brant worked
with her through the extreme heat of summer and the freezing cold of
December. All-Star founder and instructor, Cynthia Moore, pushed Lisa hard
during training because she saw potential for Lisa to succeed.
Lisa says that riding horses gives her a sense of freedom as well as
accomplishment. As she told reporter Deborah Ferguson, Lisa harbors no
anger related to the shooting. She lives each day to it's fullest with her
main focus being her 11 year old daughter Kelsey and her continued service
as a Fort Worth Police Officer.
